EECC Registration for CESR candidates

As well as UK trainees, those who are planning to apply for a CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) are now also able to apply and sit the EECC.

*Please note that if you are retaking the EECC CESR exam for 2024, please use an alternative email address to register for the exam than the one you previously registered with, otherwise you won't be able to register.

IMPORTANT: When registering for the exam you MUST provide your ESC ID number (which is mandatory when accessing  the EECC prep course).  If you do not have one please open an account here  Create a MyESC account

Your registration will be cancelled if you do not provide a valid GMC Number, NTN or ESCID as these are mandatory requirements for the EECC / EECC CESR Exam.

Please Note: The EECC is not a formal qualification but demonstrates knowledge of core cardiology equivalent to that required for the award of a certificate or completion of training (CCT).

  • Following the exam, successful CESR candidates will be issued with a certificate stating that they demonstrated knowledge of core cardiology, equivalent to that required for the award of a certificate of completion of training (CCT).

In order to be able to sit this exam you must:

  • Be in a cardiology post in the UK at the time of application
  • Be planning to submit in full your application for CESR within 3 years of the EECC examination date on which you intend to sit this examination
  • Obtain official confirmation of both of the above and provide the required supporting information outlined in how to apply.

How to Apply

All CESR candidates must supply the following supporting documentation:

  1. A short letter of reference* from your Medical Director
    *This letter must be on headed paper from your hospital/ trust Download Letter Example/Template
  2. Your Medical Director's name and email address
  3. Details of the posts you have worked in for the last 3 years
  4. Email the letter of reference* to  education@bcs.com
  5. After receiving your letter of reference*, the BCS education team will contact you.

Without this supporting documentation, your application will not be approved and registration for the exam may be cancelled by BCS without prior notice.

Next Steps
  • Once received, your supporting information will be reviewed by BCS (usually within 2-3 working days)
  • If approved, you will then receive a unique link to register for the exam
  • Before proceeding to register, you will also be asked to confirm you have submitted the required information.

The examination sat is the same as for UK trainees and is identical in all respects (including the 6 UK specific questions). No other version of this examination is offered.

Following the exam, successful CESR candidates will be issued with a certificate stating that they demonstrated knowledge of core cardiology, equivalent to that required for the award of a certificate of completion of training (CCT).

Results due to be released by end of July 2024.

Cancellation Terms & Conditions:

  • Places on the course are non-transferrable
  • A full refund, less £20 administration fee, will be issued for cancellations received in writing to education@bcs.com 8 weeks prior to the event
  • Cancellations received after this date will not be refunded
  • You will receive email acknowledgement when your request is received

Your data will be shared with ESC, GMC, CYIM and ProctorU® as detailed below.

ESC

From 2020, the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) will provide one year’s professional membership of the ESC and access to preparatory modules for the exam via the ESC e-learning platform to everyone registered for the EECC 2024. To do this, we need to supply your contact details to the ESC. You will be asked for consent to your data being shared as part of the registration process, for example name, home address, office address, mobile, personal number.

GMC

For the purposes of obtaining a CCT the GMC must be informed that a Dr has passed the BCS exam (please refer to the cardiology curriculum). The EECC exam is GMC compliant, therefore the BCS will provide data to the GMC once results are obtained for the purposes of quality assurance and research.  All exam data from 2020 exam entrance onwards will be shared as follows:

The BCS hold a data sharing agreement with the GMC which sets out how EECC exam data may be used. These arrangements have been considered and agreed by the EECC UK board.

CYIM and ProctorU® - exam online

In order to process your registration, it is necessary for us to share information with CYIM and ProctorU® as the online examination test provider. It is the responsibility of trainees to provide BCS with the necessary information for registration with CYIM and ProctorU®.
