About the posts

The Society seeks nominations for 17 elected positions on the British Cardiovascular Society Executive (four Officer posts) Council (two posts), and Committees (11 posts). Since 2022, there has been a significant revision of the BCS organisational structure aimed at allowing more of our members to participate at all levels of the Society and help drive the delivery of a relevant and effective organisation.

A new Environment and Sustainability Committee is being set up in 2024, for which nominations are being sought.

The requirements for the positions for 2024 are outlined in the role descriptions below:

Eligibility

For Executive positions on the Board (Officer posts), application is limited to Ordinary Members who have served as a member of Council, a member of a committee of the Society, or as an Officer of one of the Affiliated Societies.

BCS Committee membership posts are open to Ordinary and Affiliate Members of the Society. Please do consider standing for election if you have an interest in an area relevant to one of these Officer roles or committees. Regular attendance (>75%) at meetings is expected for all of these roles.

Voting

  • Members are only permitted to apply for a single position within the Society.
  • Regular attendance (>75%) at meetings is expected for all of these roles.
  • Nominees must ensure that their nominators are fully paid up Ordinary members of the society before submitting their form.

Ordinary and Associate (BJCA) members are eligible to vote on all elect positions (i.e. Executive, Council, Committee Chairs, and Committees).

Affiliate Members of the Society may vote for members who are standing for committee membership.

Please note that in accordance with an amendment to the BCS rules in 2022, members are only permitted to apply for a single position within the Society. Nominations for multiple posts will not be accepted.

11.59pm BST on Wednesday 10 April 2024

1. An online nomination form with:
  • A supporting statement for your election profile which must be no more than 500 words (please submit this with word count included at the end of your statement). The statement should include brief career details and your aspirations for the Society in relation to the role you are applying for.
  • The names and email addresses of 2 ordinary members of the Society who propose and second the nominee.  Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure that your nominators are fully paid up ordinary members of the society.

The BCS is committed to equality of opportunity, diversity and inclusion throughout all of its activities. The Professional and Society Values Committee, which includes cross-membership from the Women in Cardiology Committee, is driving this agenda within the BCS.

The Society seeks to reflect the diverse nature of the profession and wider society. The election process and call for nominations provides an opportunity to improve the diversity of the BCS leadership and its committee membership. We welcome and encourage nominations of representatives from all backgrounds, cultures and identities, and from all the regions of the UK.

An online ballot, run by Civica on behalf of the Society, will take place between Wednesday 1 May 2024 and midnight Wednesday 22 May 2024. An email outlining the voting process will be sent to all members. Outcomes of the elections will be communicated ahead of the Annual General Meeting (AGM). The results will be formally ratified at the AGM on Wednesday 5 June 2024.
